On January 25, 2021, Grace Tame was announced Australian of the Year for her advocacy of survivors of sexual assault.
Loud, courageous, and unapologetic, Ms Tame brought public attention to the impacts of sexual violence alongside the #LetHerSpeak campaign.
Now, national conversations about sexual violence are having lasting influence across the country.
As a result of Ms Tame’s advocacy, Australia has arrived at a remarkable moment in time.
Whether it’s Brittany Higgins bringing attention to sexual harassment in Parliament House, protests like the March 4 Justice, or other survivors sharing their stories, Grace Tame’s impact has been undeniably powerful.
The passion of Ms Tame’s speech at the National Press Club was felt by Women in Media Canberra convenor and associate editor at Her Canberra, Emma MacDonald. As a moderator, she described the speech as, “loud, unapologetic, so incredibly brave”.
In an Instagram post, she wrote, “I am in awe of [Grace] and know she will make a lasting difference to all that is wrong.”
From the national spotlight to remote areas of the Australia, Grace Tame has invited survivors of sexual violence to share their stories and let their voices be heard.
When reflecting on trailblazing women who have been a catalyst for positive change, Ms Tame will always be remembered.
